Rovinj doesn't have its own airport, but you've got several good options within driving distance:
- Pula Airport (PUY) — 40 minutes by car. The closest option. Small airport with seasonal flights from across Europe. Limited connections in winter.
- Rijeka Airport (RJK) — on the island of Krk, about 2.5 hours away. Another small Croatian airport with seasonal routes.
- Ljubljana Airport (LJU) — about 2.5 hours. Good connections to European cities year-round.
- Trieste Airport (TRS) — 2 hours. Handy if you're coming from Italy or find a cheap Ryanair flight.
- Venice Marco Polo (VCE) — 3.5 hours by car. The biggest airport nearby with the most international connections. Worth it if you can't find a direct flight to Pula.
Our advice: Rent a car at the airport. Seriously. Taxis to Rovinj are expensive (especially from Venice or Ljubljana), and once you're here you'll want to explore the rest of Istria — the hilltop towns, wineries, other coastal villages. A rental car gives you that freedom. Plus, driving in Istria is easy — good roads, beautiful scenery, zero stress.
By Car
If you're driving from Central Europe, Rovinj is easier to reach than you'd think. The Istrian Y motorway (Istarski ipsilon) connects to the Slovenian highway network, so you're on proper motorways almost the entire way.
From Zagreb it's about 3 hours. From Munich about 6 hours. From Vienna about 5.5 hours. From Milan about 5 hours via Trieste.
You'll pass through Slovenia, so make sure you have a Slovenian e-vignette (you can buy it online). Croatian motorways use a toll system — just pay at the booths or use an ENC device.
By Boat
During summer (roughly June to September), there are catamaran connections from Venice and other Italian cities to Rovinj. The Venice-Rovinj crossing takes about 3 hours and it's a gorgeous ride across the Adriatic.
This works both ways — if you're staying in Rovinj and want to do a day trip to Venice, you absolutely can. Leave in the morning, spend the day in Venice, come back in the evening. One of the best perks of being on this side of the Adriatic.
Check Venezia Lines and Kompas for schedules and bookings. Book early in July and August — these fill up fast.
By Bus
It's an option, but let's be honest — bus connections to Rovinj are not great. There are direct buses from Zagreb (4-5 hours), Pula (45 min), and some other Croatian cities, but the schedules can be inconvenient and the local connections between Istrian towns are spotty at best.
If you're coming from abroad by bus, you'll likely need to connect through Pula or Rijeka. Check GetByBus or FlixBus for routes.
By Train
Don't. There's no direct rail connection to Rovinj (or anywhere useful in Istria, really). The closest you'll get by train is Koper (Slovenia) or Trieste (Italy), and from there you'd still need to rent a car or figure out a bus. It's just not worth the hassle.
