FAKS Dance is an international folklore and traditional dance festival that has earned the prestigious European Festival Association (EFFE) label four consecutive times, placing it among Europe’s finest cultural events. Each autumn, the festival brings folk dance ensembles from around the world to Rovinj for several days of performances, workshops and cultural exchange in one of the most beautiful settings on the Adriatic.

FAKS — the Festival of Amateur Cultural Creativity — was founded with a clear philosophy: this is not a competition but a celebration. It is a festival of art and culture lovers, of friendship and connection between local and international performers. Over 800 amateur artists of all ages and backgrounds participate each year, performing traditional dances, music and cultural showcases that span continents and centuries of heritage.

The programme includes workshops where groups learn each other’s dances and traditions, two main concerts, and a grand opening ceremony parade through Rovinj’s old town. Participants also visit central Istria for excursions that include tastings of traditional Istrian food and wine, adding a gastronomic dimension to the cultural experience.

For visitors in Rovinj during late September, FAKS Dance offers free open-air performances in the town’s squares and along the waterfront. It is a joyful, colourful spectacle that celebrates the diversity of world folk traditions — and a wonderful reminder of how music and dance can bridge cultures.
