Popolana is Rovinj's signature sports-recreational and humanitarian event, held every April since 2007. The 2026 edition — the 20th anniversary — runs under the motto "Sportom s ulica i trgova do prirode i turizma" (Through sport, from streets and squares to nature and tourism), with all proceeds supporting the Society for Persons with Disabilities of Rovinj-Rovigno and their new premises.
Saturday, 11 April
The weekend kicks off at the former railway station area (Kolodvorsko šetalište) with free horseback riding from 11:00 to 13:00, organised by Equestrian Club "Sveta Eufemija" and Haber farm. The only condition: purchase a Popolana t-shirt, with all proceeds going to the humanitarian cause. The Scout troop "Tino Lorenzetto" will be serving freshly made fritule (traditional Istrian doughnuts) at their stand.
Sunday, 12 April
The main event day takes place at the basketball courts near Hotel Eden (Šetalište za Skarabu), with activities for every fitness level:
- 5 km recreational walk/run — from the basketball courts to Delfin pool, returning through the stunning Punta Corrente (Golden Cape) forest park
- Guided cycling tour — a 20-25 km recreational ride through the Rovinj countryside
- 10 km competitive race — for registered runners
- Half-marathon — now in its 18th year, a serious road race through Rovinj's scenic coastal roads
Throughout the day, local sports clubs set up demonstrations and presentations at the basketball courts. Purchase of a Popolana t-shirt is required for recreational activities; competitive events require advance registration at utrka.com.
20 Years of Community Spirit
Since its first edition in 2007, Popolana has raised funds for causes ranging from computer equipment for persons with disabilities, orthopaedic beds for the elderly home, wheelchairs, and medical treatments for individual residents in need. The event is organised by the Sports Association of the City of Rovinj-Rovigno with support from the City of Rovinj-Rovigno, the Tourist Board, and Maistra.
