St. Lawrence Night — Noć Sv. Lovre — is one of Rovinj’s most romantic and beloved annual events. Held each August to coincide with the peak of the Perseid meteor shower, the evening transforms the entire old town into a candlelit open-air stage where music, falling stars and the scent of the Adriatic create an unforgettable atmosphere.
As darkness falls, the city’s electric lights are dimmed and thousands of candles are placed on restaurant tables, bar terraces and along the waterfront promenade. Torches line the harbour while light effects illuminate the main Trg Maršala Tita square. Multiple music stages are set up throughout the old town — on the Riviera square, along the iconic Grisia street and in tucked-away piazzas — featuring romantic ballads, jazz, acoustic sets and traditional Croatian music.
The evening traditionally opens with a parade by the Roxanne dance company, followed by hours of live performances that echo through the narrow stone streets. Locals and visitors spread blankets on the waterfront, gaze upward and count the shooting stars — the legendary “tears of St. Lawrence” — while sipping Istrian Malvasia wine.
St. Lawrence Night draws thousands of visitors each year and is considered one of the highlights of the Rovinj summer season. Arrive early to secure a good spot along the harbour, and don’t forget to make a wish on a falling star. The event is free and open to all.
