Description
Saint Catherine Island
A scenic island beach minutes from the Old Town — calm coves on one side, famous cliff-jumping rocks on the other.
Sveta Katarina (St. Catherine) is the closest island to Rovinj — a 5-minute boat ride across the harbour, and the easiest island beach to reach. A small, wooded island with a hotel in an old villa, and beaches open to anyone arriving by boat.
The eastern side, facing town, has calm sheltered coves with rocky and concrete swimming platforms and the postcard view back at the Old Town and St. Euphemia's bell tower — showers, toilets, loungers, parasols, a bar and restaurant.
The western side is wilder, famous for three cliff-jumping rocks — Gold, Silver and Bronze (Zlatna, Srebrna and Brončana stijena) — natural platforms up to about 15 metres, with excellent snorkelling.
Getting there: the scheduled island-hotel boat leaves from Delfin pier (south of the Old Town), roughly hourly in season with the last return usually around 7 pm — see the Island Hotel Katarina boat timetable for current times. Independent taxi boats also run from the town harbour on demand (no fixed schedule, buy on the day). The crossing is about five minutes; the island is small enough to walk around in an hour.
The whole island is a century-old planted park — the work of Count Milewski, who shipped in soil to forest the bare rock. For the history and the neighbouring Red Island, see our guide to Rovinj's islands.
