Island Hotel Katarina occupies the whole of Sveta Katarina, the second-largest island in the Rovinj archipelago and the closest one to the harbour — a five-minute hop on the hotel's own boat from the Delfin pier in the town centre. At its heart is the old castle built by the Polish count Ignacy Korwin-Milewski, who bought the island in the 1890s and laid out the parks, walking paths and Mediterranean gardens that still cover it today. The building's romantic Austro-Hungarian character gives the hotel a sense of place that newer resorts can't match.
The hotel has 110 rooms and 10 suites, most with a balcony or terrace and a view over either the sea or the island's gardens, looking back across the water to the old town and the Zlatni Rt (Golden Cape) forest park. Facilities include outdoor seawater pools for adults and children, restaurants and bars, a beach snack bar, and a sports centre with tennis, beach volleyball, table tennis and mini-golf. Wi-Fi is free throughout, and the swimming is straight off the natural stone coves and shingle beaches that ring the island — sunbeds and umbrellas included.
Because the island is car-free, guests park on the mainland near the Delfin pier and cross by the regular hotel boat; a shuttle links the car park to the pier. The hotel is cash-free — cards only in the restaurants, bars and sports centre — and pets are not allowed. It runs from spring through autumn, and its position makes it a genuinely quiet base within sight of the town: close enough to walk the old town in the morning, far enough to swim in peace by the afternoon.
