First things first: if you're expecting long sandy beaches with beach bars and umbrellas for rent, Rovinj is not that kind of town. The coastline here is mostly rocky and pebbly, fringed with pine forests that come right down to the water. And honestly? That's what makes it beautiful. The water is ridiculously clear, the pine shade is a blessing in August, and the rocky coves give you something most beach resorts can't — actual privacy.

Bring water shoes. Seriously. Your feet will thank you.

Mulini Beach

The most "designed" beach in Rovinj. Concrete platforms, easy access into the water, and it's right next to the Hotel Monte Mulini and Hotel Lone. It's the beach you see in the Instagram photos. Great for couples who want comfort and a cocktail bar within arm's reach. Gets crowded in peak summer.

Best for: Couples, comfort seekers, Instagram

Lone Bay

Just south of Mulini, through the Zlatni Rt forest park. A beautiful pebbly bay surrounded by pine trees. There's a beach bar, but it still feels natural. The walk there through the forest is half the experience. Good swimming, relatively shallow entry — decent for kids.

Best for: Families, nature lovers, a mix of comfort and wilderness

Škaraba

A short walk from the old town along the seaside promenade. Rocky with concrete sunbathing areas. Very local vibe — this is where Rovinj residents go for a quick swim after work. Nothing fancy, just good clear water and a sunset view of the old town.

Best for: Locals, quick swims, sunset watching

Zlatni Rt (Golden Cape) Forest Park

Not a single beach but a whole stretch of coastline within a protected forest park. Rocky shores, hidden coves, pine shade everywhere. Bring a towel, pick a flat rock, and you've got your own private spot. Some areas are FKK (naturist) — they're marked, so you won't accidentally stumble into one.

Best for: Adventurers, solitude seekers, naturists

Cuvi Beach

South of Zlatni Rt, near the Polari campsite. A long stretch with a mix of rocky and pebbly sections. More space than the town beaches, good for families who need room to spread out. There's some shade from the trees.

Best for: Families, campers staying at Polari

Amarin Beach

Up north, by the Amarin Resort. Pebbly, well-maintained, with facilities and a beach bar. A bit out of town but that means less crowded. Good for families — gradual entry and lifeguard in season.

Best for: Families with kids, resort guests

Borik Beach

One of the few beaches with some actual pebbles small enough to almost feel like sand. North of town, easy to reach. Popular with families because the water stays shallow for a while. Can get busy in July-August.

Best for: Families with small children

The Islands

St. Catherine's and St. Andrew's islands are reachable by boat taxi from the harbor. Rocky swimming spots with incredible clear water, less crowded than anything on the mainland. Pack a picnic — options on the islands are limited.

Best for: Day trippers, anyone who wants to escape the crowds

Pro Tips

  • Water shoes are essential on rocky beaches. Sea urchins are real.
  • Morning is best — beaches fill up by 11am in July/August.
  • Zlatni Rt is where locals go. The further you walk from town, the fewer people.
  • Shade — pine trees provide natural shade at most beaches, but bring an umbrella for the concrete ones.
