Marko Krnjajić photographs the parts of Istrian houses nobody puts in a brochure: the courtyard behind the gate, the back wall, the bit of yard where the household actually lives in summer. Traces of the Residents is on at Photo Art Gallery Batana in Rovinj from 17 October to 15 November 2026.

The pictures are full of two eras at once. A pergola or a mulberry tree throwing shade the way it has for fifty years, and underneath it plastic garden chairs, a trampoline, a shower rigged out of an old boiler. Facades carry rows of air conditioning units and the occasional satellite dish. Nobody is in the frame, and yet the people are the subject: what they put where, and what they could not be bothered to move.

It rewards anyone who has wondered what is behind the shuttered doors on a Rovinj back street, and it is a good hour on a grey November afternoon. The gallery is open Monday to Friday from 10:30 to 13:30 and again from 17:00 to 21:00, and on Saturday from 10:30 to 14:30. Entry is free.
