If you're choosing a campsite for a family holiday, privacy and a calm, controlled setting can matter as much as the beach itself. Most campsites along the Istrian coast sit on open, public land, where the shore and the paths through the site are free for anyone to walk. Two Rovinj campsites work differently: Val Saline and Valalta are gated, access-controlled sites open mainly to registered guests — a more private, more secure base, especially if you're travelling with children.

What "access-controlled" actually means

At most camps the coast is public: day-trippers, walkers and passers-by come and go freely. A gated campsite is closed to that casual through-traffic. Guests are registered on arrival, and entry is limited to people staying on site. At Val Saline, even visitors have to identify themselves at the entrance, leave a document and follow the camp's house rules.

For a family, that changes the feel of the whole holiday:

  • more privacy for the length of your stay;
  • a site used only by registered, authorised guests;
  • no open public path running through the middle of the camp;
  • children can cycle, walk and play with more freedom;
  • tighter control of who comes and goes, managed by the camp.

None of this means the other Rovinj camps are unsafe — Croatia is a very safe place to holiday. It simply means these two sites offer a more contained, guests-only environment that many families find more relaxing.

Val Saline: family-friendly and gated, right on the bay

Val Saline sits in one of the prettiest bays just north of Rovinj, with almost a kilometre of beach terracing gently down to the sea. Guests are registered on arrival and access is controlled under the camp's house rules, so the site stays quiet and private.

Beyond the gate it is built for families: a seawater lagoon pool and a separate children's pool, a colourful spray park, heated freshwater pools and a wellness area, plus a beach adapted for all ages. You can stay on a spacious pitch with your own tent or caravan, or in a modern mobile home, and there are restaurants and bars on site. One thing to note: pets are not allowed. Valalta: gated — but a naturist (FKK) resort

Valalta, also north of the town, is fully gated and guests-only too — but it is important to be clear about what it is. Valalta is a naturist (FKK) resort, one of the best known in Europe, and nudity is the norm across the whole village. That makes it a niche, specialist choice: it suits families who are comfortable with naturism, and it is not a conventional family campsite. Security without giving up the coast

A gate doesn't cut you off from Rovinj. You still have the clear Adriatic on your doorstep, pine woods to walk and the old town a short trip away — you simply come home each evening to a quiet, controlled site rather than an open stretch of public coast. For parents, that peace of mind is worth a lot: the kids can roam, and you can relax.
