Rovinj is small enough to walk end to end in 20 minutes, but where you sleep still shapes the trip. The Old Town is romantic and car-free; the hotels just south of it have the spas and the sea; the family resorts sit a little further out. Here's how the areas actually differ — and the hotels we'd point friends to in each.
The quick answer
- First visit, want the postcard — stay in or just above the Old Town.
- Luxury, spa, beach on the doorstep — the Monte Mulini / Lone Bay strip.
- Family with kids — Amarin and the northern resorts.
- Car-free escape — St. Andrew (Red Island).
- Using the car daily to explore Istria — see our hotels with parking guide.
Old Town — for atmosphere and walkers
The historic peninsula is the obvious choice for a first trip: cobbled lanes, the bell tower of St Euphemia, cafés strung along the harbour. It's a pedestrian zone, so you arrive on foot with your bags. Boutique heritage stays here include Heritage Angelo d'Oro, Villa Valdibora and Casa Garzotto, with the grand Hotel Adriatic right on the main square. Our Old Town walking guide maps the lanes.
Monte Mulini & Lone Bay — for spa, sea and quiet luxury
Ten minutes' walk south of the centre, along the edge of Punta Corrente forest park, is Rovinj's cluster of high-end hotels. Hotel Lone (5★, a design landmark) and Monte Mulini (5★) sit above Lone Bay; Hotel Eden (4★) backs onto the park; and the waterfront Grand Park Hotel (5★) looks straight across to the Old Town. All have spas, pools and their own parking.
Amarin & the north — for families
Two to three kilometres north, the Amarin area is built for families: bigger rooms, kids' pools, gentle beaches. Family Hotel Amarin and the neighbouring resort and campsite share the same shallow-water coast, a short drive or cycle from town — and a seasonal tourist train and resort boat link the Amarin area to the centre.

St. Andrew (Red Island) — for a car-free island
Island Hotel Istra has its own islet, a short boat hop from the harbour. You swap "walk into town" for "wake up surrounded by sea" — a good pick for a couple who want calm and don't mind the ferry timetable.

Camping and mobile homes
If you'd rather have your own space, Rovinj's campsites run from full resorts with mobile homes and pools to quiet pine-shaded pitches. Camping Amarin and Veštar are the family-friendly picks; Porton Biondi is the closest to the Old Town.
When to book
July and August fill months ahead, especially the Old Town boutiques — most have only a dozen rooms. If you're coming in peak season, book by spring. May, June and September are the sweet spot: warm sea, thinner crowds, better rates. Compare live prices in the search box on this page, or browse all our Rovinj hotels for photos and details.
