Rovinj has an absurd number of good restaurants for a town its size. The Istrian food scene is legit — truffles, olive oil, fresh seafood, homemade pasta, and local wines that don't get the recognition they deserve. Here's our honest take on where to eat.
Fine Dining
Monte
Rovinj's crown jewel. A Michelin-starred restaurant in the heart of the old town with a terrace overlooking the harbor. Chef Danijel Đekić creates modern Istrian cuisine that's genuinely world-class. The tasting menu is an experience. Book well in advance — especially in summer.
Cap Aureo
Another Michelin star, this one inside the Grand Park Hotel. Elegant, refined, with wine pairings that actually make sense. More formal than Monte but equally impressive. This is special-occasion dining.
Agli Amici Rovinj
The Rovinj outpost of the legendary Friulian restaurant, also Michelin-starred. Italian-Istrian fusion at its finest. The setting inside the Hotel Lone is sleek and contemporary.
Tekka by Lone
Michelin-starred Japanese cuisine — not what you'd expect in Rovinj, but it works beautifully. Fresh Adriatic fish meets Japanese technique. At the Hotel Lone.
Traditional Istrian
La Puntulina
Tables literally on the rocks above the sea. The location is unbeatable — sunset dinner here is one of Rovinj's best experiences. The food is solid Istrian-Mediterranean. Get the seafood. Reservations essential in summer.
Konoba Veli Jože
A proper konoba — traditional Istrian tavern with rustic charm. Known for grilled meats and Istrian specialties like fuži pasta with truffles. Cozy atmosphere, local wines, honest prices.
Kantinon
A more casual spot in the old town with honest, traditional Istrian food. Good for lunch — grilled fish, pasta with truffles, local olive oil on everything. Reasonable prices for the quality.
Konoba Jure
Another solid traditional option. Family-run, unpretentious, the kind of place where the food speaks for itself.
Seafood & Mediterranean
Maestral
On the harbor promenade. Fresh fish and seafood, classic preparation, fair prices. Nothing revolutionary but reliably good. Great spot to sit and watch the boats while you eat.
Scuba
Seafood-focused with a casual, beachy vibe. Good for a relaxed lunch by the water.
Orca
Well-known for fresh fish and seafood platters. A local favorite that's been around for years.
Casual & Modern
Blu
Contemporary Mediterranean cuisine in a stylish setting. Good cocktails too. A nice middle ground between fine dining and casual.
Brasserie Adriatic
Inside the historic Hotel Adriatic on the main square. Brasserie-style dining with a modern twist. Great terrace for people-watching.
Giannino
Italian-leaning menu with pasta, risotto, and grilled dishes. Casual and friendly.
La Boca
A more laid-back option with a varied menu. Good for groups who can't agree on what to eat.
Tips for Eating in Rovinj
- Reserve in summer. Seriously. The good restaurants fill up by 7pm in July-August. Book a day or two ahead, or eat at odd hours.
- Ask for the daily catch. The freshest fish isn't always on the printed menu.
- Try the truffles. Istria is one of Europe's top truffle regions. Truffle pasta, truffle steak, truffle everything — it's not a tourist trap, it's genuinely excellent here.
- Local wines: Malvazija (white) and Teran (red) are the Istrian signatures. They're affordable and surprisingly good.
- Lunch is cheaper. Many restaurants offer the same quality at lunch for less. The views are the same, and the crowds are smaller.
